Lincoln coach Dwayne (Tiny) Morton has plenty of faith in Da’Shawn Suber, despite an uneven start to the shooting guard’s season.
Suber comes from good coaching stock, and Morton figures that alone gives him what it takes to handle the pressure that comes along with Lincoln vs. Boys & Girls basketball in Coney Island.Suber spent his first two years at Rice HS, playing for legendary coach Mo Hicks. He spent last season at St. Patrick in Elizabeth, N.J, playing for Kevin Boyle, a three-time national coach of the year. When it was time to pick a new school after Boyle left to coach in Florida, Suber recalled attending games between Lincoln and the Kangaroos, and he wanted to be part of the rivalry. On Saturday, he played a huge part in a matchup of schools that have won nine of the past 10 PSAL city championships, scoring 12 points in a 74-64 win over Boys & Girls that gave Lincoln (13-2, 10-0) sole possession of first place in Brooklyn ‘AA’. The game was called with less than a second left when tempers flared. It didn’t come as a surprise that Lincoln’s star sophomore, Isaiah Whitehead, had a game-high 21 points, or that 6-7 Tafari Whittingham had 14 points against the Kangaroos’ smaller frontline. But Suber’s breakout performance was something of a bonus.
“It was an intense game but I wasn’t overwhelmed,” said Suber, whose two three-pointers helped Lincoln tie the game, 31-31, at halftime. “I’ve played in big games like this before so I knew how to respond. The winwas a confidence-booster for the Railsplitters, wh shut down Boys & Girls (11-2, 8-2) talented wing Leroy (Truck) Fludd, forcing him into foul trouble and holding him scoreless in the first half. They also held sweet-shooting Rashad Andrews, a transfer from St. Anthony in Jersey City, scoreless in the second half after he scored 13 points in thf first half.Whittingham, a transfer from Stratford, Conn., scored six points during a crucial 8-0 run for Lincoln to open the third quarter. Whitehead scored nine of his points in the fourth quarter and spent most of the game defending Fludd, who finished with 14 points. |
